CROSSING
Lewis Mall Wharf

The five islands that refuse to be isolated.
In 1904, Boston opened the East Boston Tunnel, creating the first subway tunnel in North America to run beneath a body of water. It remains in use today as part of the MBTA Blue Line.
Before that, ferries provided the primary connection between East Boston and the rest of the city. Later, the Sumner and Callahan Tunnels expanded that network, carrying vehicle traffic beneath the harbor.
This site, at the MBTA inner harbor ferry dock looking at the waters the tunnels run beneath, is part of East Boston's tradition of crossings.
