ADAPTATION

From incubator to threat: the sea

By 2050, sea levels in Boston Harbor are projected to rise by approximately one foot, increasing the frequency and severity of coastal flooding across low-lying neighborhoods like East Boston.

Much of this area is built on filled land created in the 19th and early 20th centuries. As a result, large sections sit at elevations that are already vulnerable to storm surge and high tides.

Adaptation here is ongoing. It reflects both past decisions to reshape the land and current efforts to respond to changing environmental conditions. The challenge is not theoretical—it is already beginning to take shape.
